DFER CT Responds to Release of 2018-19 School Vaccination Data

October 21, 2019 — The Connecticut Department of Public Health released school-level immunization data for the 2018-2019 school year today, indicating that the number of schools failing to meet the federally recommended immunization threshold is on the rise. At the same time, the number of families claiming religious exemptions to vaccination requirements has also increased. In response to the data, Amy Dowell, State Director of Democrats for Education Reform CT, released the following statement:

“We applaud Governor Lamont for making this data public, and for affirming today that he will support the repeal of religious exemptions from school immunization requirements.

“Unfortunately for Connecticut and its school children, today's data shows why that repeal is necessary. A shocking 134 schools in our state have vaccination rates below federal guidelines, and many of them are public schools. Worse still, this number is on the rise, meaning Connecticut students are growing more vulnerable to communicable diseases. We should listen to doctors on this topic, who have said loud and clear that vaccinations lead to healthier kids and a healthier public.

“It's our sincere hope that the General Assembly takes action in the next legislative session to remove this exemption, and keep Connecticut's public school students safe in every classroom."
